On the afternoon of April 30 (Monday), Pat Heyn and I played hooky from work and went to Janesville to see how Jason was doing. This was Day 17 for him. He had another very productive day - over 50 miles again, I think - most of the time running into a stiff easterly head wind. (Photo's inside!)
This was Robert Wehner's first full day on the job as Jason's support van driver, one-man crew, etc. It's obvious that Robert knows what he's doing. Very efficient and supportive. Robert had his act together so well that he was even able to get the oil changed in Jason's vehicle without missing a single checkpoint.
Another sign that the stars were aligned for Jason's run today was seen in Milton, WI. A long freight train was chugging through town, right across the street in front of Jason. Jason never broke stride - he reached the tracks at the very moment that the last boxcar cleared the intersection.
We ran some really nice sections of the Ice Age Trail we had never seen before. There's a straight, flat, wooded segment connecting Janesville and Milton - a rails-to-trails piece.
[Coming soon.]
Then there's a wild area around Storrs Lake through older, denser forest.
Although Jason has not encountered much rain so far, the rivers, lakes, and marshes of southern Wisconsin have abundant water this year. Occasionally, we had to get our feet wet.
This was a day when the wild plum trees were blooming - white blossoms everywhere. We also heard lots of birds singing, including the calls of sandhill cranes. Jason was still running strong at the end of another 11-hour day. He decided run to the top of one more hill, where he'll start up again for Day 18.
