A word or two about Tom Bunk, Jason's companion and crew for a good chunk of this Ice Age Trail run. Besides the obvious - that Tom is a knowledgeable, caring, and unselfish individual - Tom's own accomplishments as an ultramarathoner and trailrunner qualify him to help see Jason through...
At age 65 or so, Tom is now retired from his old day job. But he is running as much and as fast as ever, it seems. He has been an American national age group champion in ultra events. Tom also was the long-time race director of the Glacial Trail 50, an autumn race in the northern Kettle Moraine, as well as other races.
Lorraine and Tom Bunk of North Prairie, WI
Tom lives in North Prairie, Wisconsin, not far from the Ice Age Trail in the southern Kettle Moraine. Tom's wife Lorraine Bunk is also an ultramarathoner and national age group record-holder.
No one knows the jumbled terrain and multiple trails of the Kettle Moraine as well as Tom does. He organizes and leads the annual warm-up runs in the weeks preceding the Ice Age Trail 50. With his spray paint cans in hand, he is known as a trail-marker extraordinaire. Every year as far back as anyone can remember, Tom has volunteered and marked the course for the Kettle Moraine 100, the 100-mile race in June. Jason and I, the co-race directors of the KM100, boast that there is no better-marked trail race in the country, "and we all thank Tom Bunk for that."
